In The Still Of The Light by Don Merz, from his gallery at www.PhotoBurrito.com

Don was into film “movies” at an early age producing several 8mm film silent “epics”.  By the end of high school, Don was working for local film studio Mode-Art Pictures, doing creative lighting for TV commercials and then-called “industrial films”.

Don formed his own lighting equipment rental company, Merz Production Associates,  in 1971. Clients ultimately included KDKA Radio, KDKA TV, Westinghouse, PPG Industries, Conneaut Lake Park, United States Steel, William G. Beal Associates and J. Walter Thompson Advertising. During these heady times, Don was a regular contributor to Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Arts Festival, displaying his still photography.

Abandoning the film biz for family life, Don went to college, followed by grad school, and raised 8 children with his wife, Mary Ann. When the kids became adults, Don turned back to his love of photography and lighting. Don founded Ovation Images in 2001. He enjoys both digital and film photography in almost every format–but very seldom goes back to his motion picture roots.  Don is found on facebook, LinkedIn and G+ daily and can be e-mailed at don@ovationimages.com.
